The
20th Century Children's Book Treasury: Celebrated Picture
Books and Stories to Read Aloud Janet Schulman 1998
Make room on your bookshelf,
because anyone who has a kid, or is a kid at heart, will
want a copy of this treasure. From ten decades of storytelling
comes a collection of 44 of the most memorable and beloved
children's books of our time. As a gift, a keepsake, and
a companion in a child's first steps toward a lifelong love
of reading it is a collection of picture book stories by
such authors as Ludwig Bemelmans, Ezra Jack Keats, and Maurice
Sendak.
Tomie
de Paola's Favorite Nursery Tales Tomie de Paola
1986
An illustrated collection of poems, fables, and stories
for the nursery, with an emphasis on traditional tales.
The smallest can listen to ``The Three Bears,'' the middle-sized
ones will enjoy ``The Owl and the Pussycat,'' and the older
ones will puzzle out ``Rumpelstiltskin.'' Jacobs, Andersen,
and Grimm account for most of the selections, and there
are a few poems, too. DePaola's droll, witty, and very funny
illustrations capture the essence of each story from a child's
point of view. It's unlikely that any adult will get away
with reading just one of these selections for a bedtime
story.
My
Very First Mother Goose Iona Arichibald Opie 1996
For this nursery rhyme collection, the British folklorist
Iona Opie has chosen 68 rhymes and arranged them in the
loose framework of a day's activities, from morning till
night. The book opens with Jack and Jill's disastrous trip
to fetch a pail of water and concludes with a prayer for
a safe journey. Such a spirit of fun and pleasure emanates
from every page of this big, handsome volume that although
there are many distinguished entries in the nursery-rhyme
book field, this one is sure to add special joy to any collection.
