Each season, we select a different children’s charity to which we donate $.50 for every order received. This is our small way of giving back to children everything that they have given to us.

This Season’s Charity

Gwin's Garden Gate

Last holiday season, we chose Gwin's Garden Gate, an educational foster home in Michigan for abused and neglected girls ages fourteen to eighteen. I'm proud to report that Gwin's is open and operating with a terrific live-in foster Mom and two teenage residents thus far. We believe in Gwin's so much that we've pledged our support again this season.

Past Charities

Summer, 2006
Camp Michitanki

Total Amount Donated: $14,980.00

Camp Michitanki is an extra-special joint venture of the YMCA and the University of Michigan that sends organ donor recipients to camp. Most camps can't accommodate these kids due to their medical histories and medication regimens. But Camp Michitanki makes it possible, even for families who can't afford to pay. Find our more. E-mail: michitanki@umich.edu for information.

Spring, 2006
National Toy Adaptation Network for Children with Disabilities

Total Amount Donated: $13,189.50

As we enter our seventh year of contributing fifty cents for every catalog order to a children's charity, I was pleased to learn of a non-profit organization called the National Toy Adaptation Network. Its mission: adapting toys for children with special needs. Technicians work with therapists to customize toys: adding extended control handles, seat lift devices, Velcro safety straps, specialized controls, whatever it takes to make that toy safe and enjoyable for the child - all done for free. Parents can call 1-888-FIX-A-TOY or visit www.allied-services.org for more information.

Winter, 2005
Gwin's Garden Gate

Total Amount Donated: $48,329.00

When is a child no longer a child? When she's a teenager? When he's bar mitzvah'd? When she gets her license? When he graduates?

It's hard to say. Here at Sensational Beginnings, we tend to focus on younger children whose development is still defined in stages of play and learning.

But our children continue to need our guidance and support well into their teens and even early twenties.

Our regular readers know we contribute fifty cents for every order to a children's charity. For our Holiday edition, I'm pleased to share the story of Gwin's Garden Gate, an educational home in Monroe, Michigan, for abused and neglected girls ages 16-18.

Gwin's Garden Gate provides safety and support to these teens, helping them to regain their confidence, learn life skills and prepare to enter the job market. In this Holiday season, we're grateful for the opportunity to provide shelter and love to these young people.

I'm a big believer that time spent with children is time well spent, so I encourage you to seek out ways to share this Holiday season with your family. Go sledding. Make snow angels. Bake cookies for charity.

Because - like it or not - there will come a time when your child is no longer a child. Make as many memories as you can while you can. Happy Holidays from the entire Sensational Beginnings Team!

Fall, 2005
River Raisin Centre for the Arts

Total Amount Donated: $42,881

Speaking parent to parent, I can't encourage you enough to expose your child to the arts: as a participant AND as an audience member. You never know the spark you may ignite or the prodigy you may unleash. With this in mind, our charity of choice this season is the River Raisin Centre for the Arts here in Monroe, MI, which devotes a great deal of its arts programming to children.

Summer, 2005
Camp Courageous, Inc.

Total Amount Donated: $16,092

Sometimes it takes a horrific event like the tsunami disaster this year to remind us of the devastating power of water. Like so many citizens of the world, I watched in abject horror and made a pledge in support of the relief efforts.

And then I came to work, sat down at my desk and was reminded that water can also have an overwhelmingly positive effect on us. I saw photos of happy families swimming and splashing together in pools. I saw delighted children being introduced to the water for the first time in our safety swimgear. And I saw the tremendous work being done at a very special place called Camp Courageous. This wonderful non-profit organization in Northwest Ohio provides the same camping experiences we all enjoy to those who need them more: children and adults with Down Syndrome, Epilepsy, Autism, Cerebral Palsy and physical handicaps. When they asked us to help support their new handicapped-accessible aquatic facility, it seemed like the right way to make the most of this summer.

Spring, 2005
Heartsong Incorporated

Total Amount Donated: $13,226.50

When I learned of Heartsong, Inc., I knew it would be a charity of choice for us. Winter, 2004
Feed the Children

Total Amount Donated: $43,720.50

The devastating combination of poverty and AIDS in Kenya has led to the practice of abandoning babies, who are often malnourished and fighting to survive. The stories are beyond heartbreaking. But Feed the Children has opened a care center in Nairobi that not only helps these babies survive, but places them with families who can care for them. I am thankful that, from our little headquarters in Monroe, Michigan, we are able to send a message of hope to these children this holiday season.

Spring, 2004
Bhojay Foundation of Kutch, India

Total Amount Donated: $11,200.00

We received a letter from the Bhojay Foundation. Kutch had been devastated by an earthquake in 2001. Its citizens were working hard to rebuild their infrastructure, and they wrote asking for funds to buy an ambulance that would be used to transport children from remote villages to the medical facilities in the area. We are grateful to be in a position to contribute fifty cents for every order placed to a charity like the Bhojay Foundation.

Winter, 2003
Toledo Symphony

Total Amount Donated: $40,175.00

It seemed entirely appropriate that this season's contribution would be the gift of music. We're supporting the Toledo Symphony's Education Department, reaching over 60,000 children and adults a year through community concerts, music lessons and classes. Music makes a difference: not just for children, but for all of us. In a time when arts funding is being significantly reduced and even cut, I think it's important that we keep the music playing and inspire our children the way music inspired us.
